What to Wear to Work in Summer: A Guide to Breathable Fabrics

The right summer workwear starts with fabric, not cut. A well-tailored piece in the wrong material will still leave you uncomfortable by 2pm, while the right fabric in a simple cut can carry you through a full Indian summer workday. Here's how to choose.

Cotton poplin: the everyday baseline

Cotton poplin is a tightly woven, lightweight cotton fabric that breathes well and holds a crisp finish without feeling stiff. It's naturally moisture-wicking in a way synthetic blends aren't, which matters more in humid heat than most fabric labels let on.

This is why it shows up across most of our workwear basics; the relaxed fit button-down shirt and the pleated short sleeve shirt are both cut from it. If you only own one summer work fabric, this is the one to prioritise.

Banana crepe: structure without the heat

Crepe fabrics have a reputation for being heavier or more formal, but banana crepe specifically has a natural drape and a wrinkle resistance that makes it genuinely wearable through long days including sitting for hours at a desk without the fabric creasing behind the knees or waist. It also has a subtle sheen that reads more polished than matte cotton, which is useful when your workwear needs to double as evening-appropriate.

Our high neck structured midi dress and asymmetrical pleated trousers both use banana crepe for this reason structure that doesn't trap heat.

What to avoid, even if it looks office-appropriate

Polyester blends and rayon-heavy fabrics are the two most common summer workwear mistakes. Both can look crisp on a hanger, but neither breathes well, and both tend to cling in humidity rather than skim. If a fabric feels slightly tacky to the touch before you've even worn it, that's usually a preview of how it will behave after an hour in the heat.

Building a five-day summer work rotation

A functional summer workwear rotation doesn't need many pieces if the fabrics are right:

  • Two cotton poplin shirts (one solid, one with texture like pleating)
  • One banana crepe dress for days you want a single-piece outfit
  • One pair of high-waisted trousers in a breathable cotton twill
  • One structured skirt or co-ord set for a change of silhouette

Rotate tops and bottoms independently rather than treating each piece as a fixed outfit, and the same five pieces cover most of a working week.

The one-line rule

If you're choosing between two pieces that look equally office-appropriate, pick the one in natural fiber over synthetic every time — cotton poplin and banana crepe over polyester and rayon blends. Cut matters, but in Indian summer heat, fabric is what actually determines whether you make it through the day comfortably.
